The tech radar is buzzing today with three new mobile releases in the premium smartphone layer — Moto Z, Xperia XZ and Galaxy S8.
Here’s the inside track on the three phones:
Moto Z2 Play
The Moto Z Play, launched last year, didn’t have the fastest processor or the best camera, but it did have the best battery life you could get in any smartphone according to The Verge. The Z2 Play from the Lenovo-owned Motorola stable, is an improvement on the Z. This mod-compatible smartphone has gone for a weight-loss, becoming thinner and lighter thanks to the battery which is 15% smaller than last year’s model. Although this means slightly lower battery life, stay calm and slap on the new TurboPower mod on to the phone.
This comes with a water-repellent, nano-coated 5.5″ AMOLED 16:9 display, 12MP Dual Pixel AF rear camera, and a 5MP front camera with dual LED flash.
The phone, now with a metal back instead of glass and a bigger fingerprint sensor, comes with 3,000mAh battery, 3 or 4GB of RAM, 32 or 64GB of storage, and with microSD card support. Moto has thoughtfully built this model over the weakness of the Z Play, and has also tossed in a few more
Moto Mods to go with it, according to GSM Arena.
Sony Xperia XZ Premium
Sony is all set to give the most powerful processor in a Sony mobile – the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. The Xperia XZ Premium has the usual bells and whistles of a premium device, with Android 7.1 Nougat operating system, 4GB RAM and 64 GB internal memory expandable up to 256 GB. A 19 MP Motion Eye camera with super slow motion that can shoot up to an eye-watering 960 fps, the phone may become the underdog among premium mobiles, as Sony has a many companies to fight with in this segment.
It has a diamond-cut display with integrated fingerprint sensor, and the dust/waterproof protection that is standard in high-end phones. The 5.5-inch display is capable of 4K HDR, a first in mobiles. The device which sports a mirror back is powered by a 3230mAH lithium-ion battery with Quick Charging 3.0, making it a whole package. The price is set at Rs. 59,990 and upwards, on Amazon.
Samsung has launched the Galaxy S8 Plus with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB internal storage. Available in Midnight Black now, it will have three more color variants soon. The new variant has a bezel-less dual-edge Infinity Display, and has forayed into the cashless payment service with Samsung Pay, a mobile payment service with defence-grade security platform Samsung Knox, and a personal assistant called Bixby, reports IANS.
The device has a 12 MP rear camera with multi-frame processing and optical image stabilisation. Selfies are clicked with an 8MP auto-focus front shooter. Running on Android 7.0 Nougat and powered by a 3,500 mAh battery, the device is priced at Rs. 74,990, and can be pre-booked on Samsung Shop and Flipkart starting June 2.
Bixby, a new app that lives inside the camera, gallery and internet, similar to Siri and Cortana, gives the user a deeper understanding of what they’re looking at. According to samsung.com, the user can use voice, text or touch to say what they need. When the user lost for words, Bixby uses the camera to analyse on-screen content and provide with a range of information services.
